The Winnipeg Jets selected four players in the 2024 National Hockey League Draft. The Jets picked defenceman Alfons Freij (37th overall) in round two. Freij played the majority of last season in the J20 Nationell in Sweden where he recorded 14 goals and 19 assists in 40 games. Winnipeg took forward Kevin He (109th overall) in round four. He racked up 53 points in 64 games with the OHL’s Niagara IceDogs last season. The Jets chose forward Markus Loponen (155th overall) in round five. Loponen had 54 points in 45 games with Karpat U20 of the SM-sarja league. Winnipeg selected forward Kieron Walton (187th overall) in round six. Walton registered 43 points in 65 games with the OHL’s Sudbury Wolves. Brandon Wheat Kings defenceman Charlie Elick was chosen by the Anaheim Ducks in round two.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers lost 22-19 to the Calgary Stampeders at McMahon Stadium. Rene Paredes won it for the Stamps with a 52-yard field goal in overtime. Winnipeg back-up quarterback Chris Streveler threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Drew Wolitarsky with 19 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Sergio Castillo’s convert tied the score at 19-19. Castillo was good on four field goal attempts including a franchise record 60-yarder with 9:24 remaining in the fourth quarter. Blue Bombers starting quarterback Zach Collaros left the game with an injury late in the first half. Collaros took a hit in the midsection from the helmet of Calgary defensive lineman Josiah Coatney. Winnipeg is 0-4 and will host the Ottawa RedBlacks next Friday.


The Winnipeg Goldeyes plated five runs in the first inning en route to a 10-4 victory over the Gary SouthShore RailCats at U.S. Steel Field. Miles Simington went four-for-four at the plate and Ramon Bramasco had three hits and drove in three runs for the Fish.


Canada has advanced to the knockout round at Copa America. Maxime Creteau recorded the clean sheet as Canada played to a scoreless tie with Chile Saturday night in Orlando. Canada moved onto the quarterfinals when Group A leader Argentina defeated Peru 2-0.
