The Pembina Valley Orioles scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning, three in the third and tacked on two more in the fourth en route to a 9-6 victory over the Altona Bisons Wednesday night in Winkler. Orioles third baseman Darius Peters was a triple away from hitting for the cycle. Peters doubled in the second inning, hit a solo home run in the fifth and singled in the sixth inning. Mike Heppner also had three hits for Pembina Valley and stole three bases. Altona first baseman Denton Mateychuk had two hits and drove in a pair of runs. The Orioles are in fifth place in the Manitoba Junior Baseball League with a 7-9 record. The Bisons are in the cellar at 2-14. 


The Altona Bisons have qualified for the Provincial Senior AA Baseball Championship next month in Morden. Altona outscored the defending Border Baseball League champion Winkler Whips 15-12 at Access Field. The Bisons have won seven in a row and are in first place in the East Division with a 12-2 record. 


The Winnipeg Goldeyes dropped an 8-6 decision to the Chicago Dogs at Impact Field. Max Murphy and Roby Enríquez homered for the Fish who have lost seven of their last eight games. The Goldeyes and Dogs will wrap up their three-game series tonight. Winnipeg will then play three against the Gary SouthShore RailCats beginning Friday in Indiana. 


The NHL Awards will be handed out tonight in Las Vegas. Connor Hellebuyck of the Winnipeg Jets and Thatcher Demko of the Vancouver Canucks are finalists for the Vezina Trophy for the league's top goaltender, and fellow Canuck Quinn Hughes is up for the Norris Trophy for top defenceman. Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid is a finalist for the Hart Trophy as league MVP. Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs is a finalist for the Ted Lindsay Award, which goes to the most outstanding player as voted on by the players. 


The Winnipeg Football Club announced its support for the inaugural Team Manitoba Indigenous High-Performance Program. The team that will take part in the second annual Indigenous Cup, set to take place in Edmonton at the end of June with teams from Alberta, Saskatchewan and for the first time, Manitoba. The Blue Bombers are proud to support the team by covering travel fees, uniform costs, accommodations for players and coaches along with coach certification costs for the program. Running concurrently with the U20 IFAF World Junior Championships, the Indigenous Cup elevates its significance by offering a unique opportunity for Indigenous athletes to showcase their talent on an international stage alongside teams from the USA, Japan, Brazil, Austria, Australia, Panama, and host Canada.


The Toronto Raptors selected Ja'Kobe Walter with the 19th pick of the 2024 NBA Draft. Walter averaged 14.5 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.4 assists as a freshman for the Baylor Bears last season. Toronto native and two-time Naismith player of the year winner Zach Edey was chosen ninth overall by the Memphis Grizzlies. The Atlanta Hawks took Zaccharie Risacher with the top pick in the draft, the second straight year a player from France was the first player selected.
