Winkler Fire Department has been quite busy since late Friday afternoon attending several calls including a grass fire, camper trailer fire and vehicle fire.

The grass fire call came in Friday afternoon around 4:20 p.m., with crews responding to the scene along Dickens Road west of Winkler.

Chief Richard Paetzold said it originated in a field where old bales were being burned. The flames got out of control, and spread to the creek where they threatened residential yards.

He noted the strong northwesterly winds Friday made the attack more difficult, but firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze, and stop if before any structures were impacted.

The second call came Friday evening around 10:30 p.m., with the department finding a fully involved camper trailer fire on a yard in Reinland. The flames spread to a tree, which along with the camper, also had to be extinguished. There were no injuries in the incident, and the cause remains under investigation.

And the final calls came Monday afternoon around 3 p.m., with a vehicle fire at a property on Road 22 West, which was followed barely an hour later with the department dispatched to alarms on 15th Street in Winkler.
