Gretna Stars looking to recruit young players for 2025/26 season
The Gretna Stars rec hockey league is trying to bring attention to its youngest age group ahead of the upcoming new season. Justin Friesen is a member of the league executive, and he says they are looking for players in grades 2 to 4 to join. "Over the last couple of years, that's been the slowest growing group and about 95 per cent aged out last year." Now, Friesen has turned to PembinaValleyOnline to help raise awareness of the league, which he says is an excellent alternative to organized minor hockey. "We only practice once a week, on Tuesdays, and we have games on Saturdays," he explained, adding there's no overnight/weekend trips. "So, it's less commitment and the cost is less [...] and it's more relaxed." The league is also looking for coaches, whether they are parents of players or otherwise, and a manager. "We find the kids respond better to non-parent coaches," he noted. "We had two or three last year and that was fantastic." Registration for the 2025/26 season is now open.
