Winkler Curbside Giveaway makes it easy to share, donate, and find treasures
Winkler residents have a chance to declutter and help their neighbours this weekend as the city’s annual Curbside Giveaway takes place today and tomorrow. The event encourages households to place gently used items at their curb, giving others the opportunity to pick them up for free. A simple way to share “This is a curbside giveaway,” said Wendy Klassen from the City of Winkler. “It’s easier than bringing it away. It’s easier than selling it. And someone else might love it.” The giveaway makes it simple for residents to pass along furniture, books, toys, sports equipment, gardening tools, and small appliances. Klassen emphasized that items should be in good condition. “Make sure it’s something people want,” she said. “If it’s something that might need a minor repair, put a note on there or something.” Clear labeling is also important. “You should label it as free because people don’t want to take your stuff that your kids left on your front yard,” she added. She also encouraged residents to use social media to share items. “If you have stuff that you’re putting on your curb and you have social media, post a picture of it and hashtag Winkler Curbside,” Klassen said. The city website provides additional tips, including suggestions for placing items safely at the curb and ensuring walkways remain clear for pedestrians. For those who prefer a bit of a treasure hunt, Klassen added, “You’ll find it somewhere,” highlighting the fun of discovering unexpected finds in the neighbourhood. Giving back beyond the curb For items not picked up over the weekend, Klassen recommended donating to local thrift stores. “Donate it, exactly. People bring good stuff,” she said. The city’s curbside page lists organizations and thrift stores where leftover items can find a new home, extending the life of items and supporting local causes.
