Even though it's been more like Spring than winter recently, the Altona Winter Carnival is happening Saturday with only minimal changes to what's planned.

"Nothing will be happening at the Buffalo Creek Nature Pond due to the lack of snow," explained Brittany Winkler from the Altona Recreation Department. "The cardboard toboggan races will be cancelled, but everything else will be moved to the Millennium Exhibition Centre."

So what that means is the other two previously to be outside events are now being moved indoors and still happening. The always  popular candy scramble will be inside the Rhineland Pioneer Centre at 2pm, and hockey with the W.C. Miller Aces will be from 12pm to 1pm on the ice at Sunflower Gardens.

All other previously scheduled events at the Millennium Exhibition Centre will take place Saturday as initially indicated.

"I think I remember one time when it was really, really cold and then it was cancelled, and the chatter in my office, it's never happened," said Winkler when asked whether the Altona Winter Carnival has ever been faced with a lack of snow and less than ideal ice conditions. "Yes, please join us for breakfast, and then back at twelve noon for activities."
