Students attending the welding program at Morden Collegiate will now have the opportunity to receive a certification only available at six other sites in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

It's believed Morden Collegiate is the only high school in Western Canada to have the certification.

The Canadian Welding Bureau has accredited the site as a testing centre for a credential relating to specific welds needed in the transportation equipment and structural steel industries.

Harv Giesbrecht is the Coordinator of the Red River Technical Vocational Area.

He says this will provide a practical benefit to businesses in the area, because students graduating from the Morden program will come ready to work on the first day of employment.

Giesbrecht says they are planning an event later in October to further discuss the new accreditation, as well as show area businesses how the welding program has expanded over the last five years.
