Martin Unrau is a cow-calf operator who also runs a feedlot near MacGregor.

He says, despite the border being open to under thirty month animals, there's still a lot of financial hurt in the province's cattle sector.

Unrau points to the number of complete herd dispersals in Southwestern Manitoba and Saskatchewan as evidence of the tough times cow-calf operators are facing.

He notes many are liquidating their assets, and then moving west to find jobs in the resource industry.

Unrau wants to tackle a number of issues in 2007 including the on going debate over environmental regulations, concerns over traceability systems, and how the expanding ethanol industry will impact cattle feeding.
