Zenith Vanstone scored the only goal of the shootout and Kaylee Franz made 26 saves as the Pembina Valley Hawks won their Manitoba Female U18 AAA Hockey League home opener 1-0 over the Interlake Lightning in Morden.


The Brandon Wheat Kings and Winnipeg Ice were both winners Saturday night. Jake Chiasson had a goal and two assists as Brandon downed Medicine Hat 4-1 at Westoba Place. Evan Groening, Calder Anderson and Charlie Elick also scored for the Wheat Kings who received a 34 save performance from Carson Bjarnason. Conor Geekie had a hat trick as Winnipeg beat the Tigers 5-2 in Medicine Hat. Skyler Bruce and Jaren Brinson also scored for the Ice.


Devon Shore scored the only goal of the shootout as the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 Saturday at Canada Life Centre. Cole Perfetti had both Winnipeg goals and both were scored on the power play. The Jets will play their fifth of six exhibition games Wednesday at home against the Calgary Flames.


Mackenzie Zacharias, Karlee Burgess, Emily Zacharias and Lauren Lenentine lost a pair of qualifying games Saturday at the Stu Sells Toronto Tankard. The 2022 Manitoba Scotties Tournament of Hearts champions fell 6-2 to Andrea Kelly of Fredericton in the B qualifier and then lost 8-1 in four ends to Delaney Strouse of Minneapolis in the C qualifier. Jennifer Jones did not accompany Zacharias, Burgess, Zacharias and Lenetine in Toronto. The two-time World champion and 2014 Olympic gold medalist was competing in Ottawa at the Hardline Open Mixed Doubles event.


Teoscar Hernandez and Bo Bichette had four hits each and Danny Jansen drove in five runs as the Toronto Blue Jays bounced the Boston Red Sox 10-0 at Rogers Centre. The Jays, who have four games left, are one-and-a-half games ahead of the Seattle Mariners and three games up on the Tampa Bay Rays in the race for the first wildcard spot in the American League.
